1989 Dakar Rally also known as the 1989 Paris-Dakar Rally was the 11th running of the Dakar Rally event. The course went through Libya for the first time. A record 209 of the 473 competitors completed the rally.[1] The rally was won by 1981 world rally champion, Ari Vatanen.[2] The motorcycle class was won by Gilles Lalay.[1]

* The Central Europe Rally was organised as a replacement race in the Dakar Series by Amaury Sport Organisation after the terrorist attacks in Mauritania in 2007, on the route of the 2008 race, just days before the start in Lisbon.
